Scientist Emeritus Al Merewether.
Earlier this year we announced four new awards for our Scientists Emeriti, the Dallas Peck Outstanding Scientist Emeritus Award and three Regional Scientist Emeritus Best Publication Awards. Nominations were accepted through early October and were reviewed by a panel consisting of Team Chief Scientists, Scientists Emeriti, a Program representative and the Scientist Emeritus awards coordinator. We wish to thank all of you who submitted the nominations as well as the panel members for their thoughtful recommendations.
We reviewed all of the nominations and panel recommendations and agree with the panel's findings. All of the nominees are outstanding. Since this is the first year for the awards, there was a backlog of exceptionally fine nominees. For this year only, we are delighted to announce three recipients of the Dallas Peck Outstanding Scientist Emeritus Award: William Lee, a geophysicist in the Earthquake Hazards Team; Peter Lipman, a volcanologist in the Volcano Hazards Team; and William Cobban, a paleontologist in the Central Region Earth Surface Processes Team. Each has broken new ground in their field since joining the ranks of our Scientists Emeriti.
The Best Publications Awards will be given to: David Stewart (Eastern Region) and Robert Tilling (Western Region) for "This Dynamic Planet", John Reed (Central Region) for the "Geologic Map of North America", and James Moore (Western Region) for "King of the 40th Parallel – Discovery in the American West".
Please join us in extending congratulations to these outstanding and dedicated scientists; the Geology Discipline is very fortunate to continue to benefit from their efforts. The awards will be given out at receptions that will be held in Menlo Park, Denver, and Reston in the next few weeks. Please keep posted for the exact times and places.
