Memo: Geology Science Strategy
07/03/2007 02:43 PM
To: Geology Discipline Employees
USGS Executive Leadership Team
Chief Scientists
From: Linda Gundersen, Chief Scientist for Geology
One of Pat Leahy’s last actions as Associate Director for Geology was to form a team to revise the Geology Science Strategy, Geology for a Changing World (http://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/c1172/ ) . This document has served us well and has guided the science directions of Geology Discipline programs for the last eight years. Pat realized that the new USGS Science Strategy, Facing Tomorrow’s Challenges ( http://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/2007/1309/ ), presents us with a wonderful opportunity to revisit and update Geology’s strategy. Our goal is to complete the new Geology Science Strategy by December 2007.
The Geology Science Strategy Team includes scientists from across the bureau, NSF, and academia, but needs you to participate in the process. We have established a web site ( http://geology.usgs.gov/sciStrat.shtml ) that contains background information, an on-line survey that can be accessed through the website, and an e-mail address ( GS GDSciStrat@usgs.gov ) that you can use to send us your suggestions. On the website you will also find all the presentations from the April 2007 Managers Meeting - please check it out!
The science strategy team will hold town meetings in Reston (July 17, 1:00PM Nat'l Auditorium), Menlo Park (August 29, 9:00AM Auditorium) and Denver (September 12, 9:00AM Building 810). If you are located in one of these centers, I urge you to participate.
Here is a list of the members of the Geology Scientist Strategy Team:
- Linda Gundersen (Chief Scientist, Geology)
- Jayne Belnap (Biology)

Join us as we chart a new course for the Geology Programs! Please share this message.
