Training for creation of formal metadata
	Workshop syllabus

Required preparation

• Be familiar with basic user commands on a Unix system
• Bring current documentation for at least one geospatial data set and, for the thick-skinned, digital copies of any metadata that you may already have created.

Day One

• Meet & greet
• Introduction to formal metadata and the FGDC standard (classroom)
• Lunch
• Introduction to metadata parsers: mp and cns (lab)
• Q & A
• Whine & Dine

Day Two

• Introduction to metadata editors: xtme and FGDCMETA (classroom)
• Lunch
• Hands-on session: Creating your own metadata (lab)

Day Three (optional)

• Additional hands-on metadata creation with assistance
• Building and maintaining a node of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
• Discussion of Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) and FGDC metadata
• Discussion of metadata extensions needed for geologic data

Follow-up support

• Participants will be able to help each other.
